Two-Stage Revision Procedure for Chronic Infection

Patient’s with chronic infections of total knee and total hip replacements require a two-stage procedure for eradication of the infection. This involves removal of the infected prosthesis in its entirety followed by placement of a antibiotic cement spacer. In most cases patients are able to bear some or full weight on the spacer. The patients then require IV antibiotics for at least 8 weeks. Following confirmation of eradication of infection, patients are candidates for reimplantation of the replacement. Following are a few selected patients of Dr. Borra who had undergone a two-stage procedure for chronic infection of knee and hip implants.
